Our Heightened Adventures in Peru

With the air ever so thin, the Silverpoint crew recently found themselves in the heart of the Andes Mountains at Hudbay‘s newest developing mine site, Constancia. Located approximately eight hours away from Cusco, Peru, and 4500m above sea level, it became the site of one of the most physically daunting shoots I have experienced in my career. The effects of thin air at high altitude is a weird feeling, one that is hard to explain and comprehend if not experienced personally. Although before the trip I was told it might be harder to breath and easier to tire, I took these warnings for granted. My greatest mistake was thinking that I might move, trek, and carry things as quickly as I typically have on other shoots. Of course, I later found out that this wasn’t
the case.

Most mining shoots are rarely a walk in the park, which we allude to in previous blogs, but Peru had the added challenge of elevation. Fatigue came a lot quicker then normal: equipment felt heavier, climbing a 10ft hill felt like climbing a mountain, deep breaths were often needed to walk just a few meters, and the sun scorched down on us with greater intensity as we were literally closer to the sun. The shoot was exhausting.

To say the least, a heightened sense of will power was definitely required in order for the Silverpoint crew to produce at our regular efficiency and quality. But even though a gasp of air became a regular sound on location, the crew like always, pulled through and the shoot was ultimately a success.

With the addition of footage shot at Hudbay’s other mines located in Manitoba, Canada, the final product was a film that portrayed the company’s recent progress, achievements, and stories; And, it has ultimately become a project I won’t soon forget.
