With rumours that Google’s newly acquired company, Motorola, is getting ready to release a new smartphone, a redesigned logo been rolled out. The look is a little more modern and fresh, using primary colours and a circle around the same “batwing” M, seen on the previous versions of the Motorola logo. The line, “A Google Company” appears at the bottom of the logo, further highlighting the new ownership.
The rebrand slightly modernizes a logo that has been around for a long time, and is easily recognized by many. By keeping the ‘M’, Google not only keeps the history of the company but the modern feel hints at the innovation that is to come with this new beginning. The bold, primary colours in the ring, and sans serif typeface are also main components in Google branding, further emphasizing who’s in charge (even before you read the tagline). This whole territorial thing Google added to the logo, may be a bit much, but it could have been worse…
The new logo may not be the most revolutionary redesign, or the most beautiful logo, but it serves its purpose, and doesn’t jump too far away from what people know about both Motorola and Google. The new logo was first spotted at the bottom of the Techweek 100 website, and didn’t have a very formal release. I don’t think it was meant to be a huge deal or an exciting change, but perhaps a small revamp in preparation for a series of larger changes. The transition to Google has been long and slow and it seems they are finally getting ready to release something new and exciting.
So, why did Google take control of Motorola? You many not realize, but Motorola is responsible for many mobile (and other technological) revolutions. They created the first portable cellular phones, and were the first to release a model to the public in 1984 (remember those giant, super bulky phones?). A timeline of their products and devices shows how Motorola was often at the head of innovation in the 1990s and into the early 2000s. After seeing what they are capable of, the collaboration with Google becomes even more exciting… who knows what more they’re capable of!
Since the early 2000s, it seems Motorola has been left at the back of the pack with companies like Samsung and Apple taking over a large part of the market.
As of February 2013, ComScore estimated that Motorola only accounted for 8.4% of the United States smart phone market. Google wants to change that with the release of a new, revolutionary phone, codenamed “X phone”, now known to be called Moto X. A few pictures, apparently leaked, although none really show any innovation or exciting features. They also all look different (see the pictures below) so who knows how accurate they are! According to rumors, the handset may not be very exciting, but the features within are supposed to be revolutionary. The device is said to take into consideration Motorola’s long term vision for devices, making them smarter and giving them cognitive abilities. In the future, we won’t be hunched over our devices, and instead be wearing them or talking to them.
While there are a lot of rumours surrounding the Moto X, it seems the consensus is that its strengths will be in its excellent battery life (which is common in all Motorola smartphones) and enhanced sensors allowing it to recognize actions better than any of its competition. Only time will tell what the device will truly end up looking like and what cool features it will have…but with companies like Google and Motorola teaming up, we should be able to expect something great… right? (Especially since it’s been in the works for what feels like forever).
