Silverpoint product review: DJI Osmo Raw

Product review: DJI Osmo Raw

September 25, 2017 | Opinion | by Alex

Small but mighty, meet the newest addition to our arsenal.

DJI is constantly expanding the possibilities of capturing video, whether it’s on the ground or in the air. In October 2015, DJI released their first handheld stabilizer and camera combo, the Osmo. This original Osmo was a large achievement for DJI, with the Zenmuse X3 camera, but this was just the beginning, recently expanding the camera X series to a whole new level. DJI’s Osmo series top achievement of late has been the Osmo Raw, which incorporates the Zenmuse X5R camera, also seen in the DJI Inspire Raw package, which obtains the ultimate film capabilities and covers every aerial and ground filming abilities for Silverpoint Media’s operations.

We received our Osmo Raw Combo in August 2017, and it’s been a great addition to the Silverpoint arsenal. The Osmo Raw Combo includes all the items shown in the video below, which includes the Osmo handle, Zenmuse X5R, intelligent batteries, 512GB SSD card & reader, 16GB Micro SD, Microphone, Mobile holder, adaptor for LED lights or additional audio recorders, and OSMO Raw carrying case.

What we are most excited about with our new addition is the DJI Zenmuse X5R camera & gimbal. This 3-axis stabilization system captures 4k videos, Full HD slow motion (1080-60p), allows for interchangeable lenses (comes with the DJI 15mm F/1.7), 16-megapixel photography, and is the world’s first Micro Four Thirds camera made for professional aerial video and photography. It is compact, but holds all the power a larger industry camera has, without having to spend time on set assembling a camera rig and calibrating. Not only does the gimbal on the camera allow for smooth video on set, but the Raw capabilities allow for a wider spectrum of colour capturing and gorgeous post-production colour-correction processing at Silverpoint, allowing us to expand the beauty and vibrancy of the video. The DJI X5R and Osmo handle operate fully with the DJI Go app.

When aerial photography and videos are desired, Silverpoint has the ability to attach the X5R camera & gimbal to our DJI Inspire 1 UAV (with our DJI Vibration Absorption Board), which allows us to use the camera capabilities on the ground and in the air with a quick attachment switch. The Osmo and most importantly, the Zenmuse X5R camera widens a world of possibilities for us and our clients.

Making films is a very intricate operation and when the time comes to ‘run-and-gun’, the Osmo Raw is the perfect weapon that packs the punch a larger industry camera possesses and more.
