Tim and Brenda’s Place

Cruise for the Cure

Since its inception in 2011, Tim and Brenda’s Cruise for the Cure Show and Shine has drawn more than 39,000 visitors, and close to 3,000 Show Cars, to the King City home of Tim and Brenda Schmidt. Over the past five years the event has grown into one of Canada’s largest, single-day car shows, raising an impressive $516,000 for area charities.

In the weeks following the 2014 event, Brenda received difficult news. Like her mother before her, Brenda was diagnosed with lung cancer and vowed to do all that she could to fight the disease. Finding motivation in their battle with cancer, Tim and Brenda set out to make the 2015 Cruise for the Cure the biggest and best ever, dedicating all proceeds to Sunnybrook Hospital’s Odette Cancer Centre, where Brenda was receiving treatment.

This film was created to showcase the 2015 Cruise for the Cure, as well as the emotion, heart and hard work that went into creating such a successful event.

Capturing an event of this magnitude posed challenges for the film crew in terms of logistics, travel, and timing. Pre-production planning was crucial to ensure cinematographers were able to capture key moments as they were unfolding. The team quickly established a rhythm, building the story as they were shooting, creating exciting visuals that would portray how much this event meant to those attending. Fast paced and stylized shots of cars, music, and food were used to submerse the viewer into the energy of the show, while interviews with Tim and Brenda provided the framework and basis of the story. In the edit, scenes are spliced demonstrating the contrast between the excitement of the event and heartfelt sound bites from Tim and Brenda.

The Outcome

Challenging the concept of a traditional event video, the 2015 Cruise for the Cure film exposes the deeper meaning behind the Cruise for the Cure and allows the audience a personal and touching look into the lives of the organizers, Tim and Brenda Schmidt.
